Champion Of The Week: Astrid Rosemary Ndagano Haas
This week's champion is an Austrian-Ugandan kick-boxing, feminist urban economist, passionate about evidence-based impact and the power of cities. We caught up with Astrid to ask her some questions!
Why did you choose to study Economics?
Well, that's an easy one to answer! I had the best economics teacher when I was at school and not only was she the best, she was also a woman I looked up to, and I wanted to be just like her.
How would you describe Economics?
If you were to ask 100 economists you would get 100 different answers. I think for me it's a framework to understand and analyse the world and beyond- and to really support sound decision making. It's about people and their decisions.
If you had a time machine and could meet your 16-year-old self, what advice would you give her?
Follow your passion! Following a career path is useless because you'll go off it anyway, so just follow what you love to do and that will take you on the right career path.
What is your favourite part of Economics?
I'm an urban economist so I love cities and cities are where all the economics happens- I particularly love African cities, so, I find them most interesting.
Is there anything you would do differently if you had the chance?
No, because I wouldn't be where I am today and I'm really happy where I am today, but if I absolutely had to change one thing, I think I would try to worry less about what was coming in the future.
Astrid will be at the BHM x DE event later this month so don't forget to sign-up.
