Resource - Inspiring the Next Generation of Economists – Teacher & Adviser Handout

Introduction

This classroom and careers guidance resource has been designed to help students understand what economics really is and where it can lead. Through myth-busting activities, lesson ideas, tutor time prompts and progression pathways, the resource explores how economics connects to real-world issues including climate change, healthcare, AI, inequality and public policy.


Created in partnership with Discover Economics, the handout also highlights the importance of representation and encourages students from all backgrounds to see economics as a subject for them.


Who is the resource aimed at?

Suitable for Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 students (14–18 year olds).

Ideal for Economics teachers, careers advisers, PSHE leads, Citizenship teachers and tutors.


How can the resource be used?

This resource can be used as a standalone careers education tool, or alongside the associated posters and “Meet an Economist” resources to support a full lesson or enrichment activity.

The handout includes:

  • A ready-made 50-minute lesson plan

  • Tutor time and assembly follow-up activities

  • Discussion starters linked to current affairs

  • Myth-busting activities about economics

  • Pathways into economics-related careers


How does the resource link to the curriculum?

The resource supports:

  • Careers education and Gatsby Benchmarks

  • PSHE and Citizenship themes around aspiration, equality and decision-making

  • Economics and Business curriculum links to markets, government, inequality and global issues

  • Tutor time enrichment and employability skills development

It also helps students explore transferable skills such as communication, data analysis, critical thinking and problem-solving.


How long will the activity take?

Depending on how the materials are used, activities can range from a 10-minute tutor activity to a full 50-minute lesson. The included lesson plan and extension activities allow teachers to adapt the resource to suit different classroom contexts.
