Video - Can riots really lead to democracy?

Introduction

In 2010 protests erupted across the Arab world with protesters demanding a better economic future, an end to government corruption, and most of all democracy. But what really is the impact of protest and riots on establishing democracy?

This video is part of our school series 'Representation, Protest and Political Movement’, which looks at the intersection of economics, politics and history and the effect on modern society. It is based on the published research Peaceful and Violent Origins of Voting Rights: A Political Economy Analysis of the Great Reform Act of 1832 (Toke S Aidt, Raphaël Franck)

The project is a partnership between Discover Economics, the ESRC CAGE Research Centre and the All-Ireland Centre of Excellence in Economics, History and Policy (CEPH).
